Booking online was straightforward and comfortable. Exchange at Kansai intl. Airport same - should say I have done this before. I had a great time with the JR West Wide Area Pass. Going to and around in Okayama, Kurashiki, Kobe and plenty of places inside Osaka. Only thing - I almost deleted your email titling »Your experience in Tokyo«. Maybe you should be a bit mire careful about these lines if you want more reviews? :)

    Save money & time

The JR Pass offers a budget-friendly way to explore Japan, especially for those planning multiple long-distance trips. With unlimited access across JR trains, including the Shinkansen, regional lines, and airport transfers, the JR Pass is designed to save you both time and money.

    Explore with ease and comfort

Imagine getting around all of Japan with just one pass. Explore all of Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu, and Shikoku - Japan's four main islands - in comfort and style. This eliminates the hassle of buying individual tickets each time you journey to a new city, allowing you to travel freely and spontaneously.

More than just a train pass!

Hop on and off trains, buses, airport transfers, and even ferries effortlessly. This pass grants you easy access to all JR-affiliated transportation, ensuring a smooth and hassle-free journey.

Is the JR Pass worth it?

The JR Pass can be a valuable investment for some travelers, but its actual worth depends on your itinerary, pace of travel, and the number of destinations you want to visit. The pass is especially cost-effective for visitors planning extensive, long-distance travel across Japan via Shinkansen (bullet trains). Take a look at some example itineraries that illustrate how purchasing the pass can lead to significant savings on your trip.

7-day JR Pass vs. Individual tickets

Compare estimated fares for popular train routes against the cost of a 7-Day JR Pass. By choosing unlimited rides for part of your trip, you could save up to ¥19,140. It’s a practical way to explore Japan’s bullet trains and beyond without juggling individual tickets.

14-day JR Pass vs. Individual tickets

Total fares for multiple legs can add up quickly, but with the 14-Day JR Pass, you could pocket up to ¥28,320. Enjoy two weeks of unlimited train rides — no separate fares or ticket lines — so you can focus on exploring Japan.

In addition to direct cost savings, the JR Pass also offers exclusive discounts at select tourist attractions, allows for flexible travel, and provides convenient access to the Japanese railways – all of which make it a smart choice for tourists visiting Japan. If you’re not planning a long-distance trip across Japan, however, consider investing in regional JR passes. You will save big as you explore a specific region of the country.

    Inclusions with the JR Pass

The JR Pass provides extensive coverage across the JR network, allowing for unlimited travel throughout Japan on JR-operated services. Here’s what the pass includes:

    • Express, fast, and local trains: Access to most JR-operated Shinkansen services, though it excludes Nozomi and Mizuho trains. Use the Shinkansen map to see available routes for JR Pass holders. Read more about Shinkansen here.
    • Tokyo Monorail & Yamanote Line: Ideal for navigating within Tokyo on JR-operated lines.
    • Airport transfers: Covers the Narita Express and Kansai Airport Express for convenient airport connections.
    • Local JR Buses: Available in major cities; however, highway buses and certain long-distance JR buses are not covered.
    • JR-West Miyajima ferry services: Grants access to Miyajima Island.
    • Exclusive discounts: Enjoy special offers on selected JR-affiliated services. You can get more information here.

For a full view of the JR network, refer to the JR network map here. Keep in mind that while the JR Pass covers most JR-operated routes, separate tickets are required for non-JR-operated metro, subway, and private rail services.

    Seat reservations

As a JR Pass holder, you are entitled to reserve seats on JR trains free of charge. Reservations must be made before boarding, and once on the train, you cannot switch to a reserved seat without prior booking. Follow these simple steps to book your seat:

    1. Where to book: Bring your activated JR Pass to any JR Ticket Office, Travel Service Center, or ticketing machine at train stations. Staff can assist you with schedules and available options.

    3. Additional fees: Private compartments, sleeping cars, and Limited Express trains require an extra fee.

    When to reserve

Seats are recommended to be reserved during Japan’s peak travel periods (April 27–May 6, August 11–20, December 28–January 6), as trains tend to fill up quickly. Green Pass holders should also book in advance to ensure seating in Green Class.

    Online Reservations

For select routes, reservations can be made online through JR East’s Ekinet service for Shinkansen and certain limited express trains in the JR East and JR Hokkaido areas.
